Rightful Heir

Star Trek: The Next Generation
Episode 148
StarDate 46852.2
Air Date 05-15-1993

Jan 6th, 2005

Synopsis:

Having been inspired by the reactions to his teachings of the half Klingon, half Romulan children he freed in episodes 141 and 142 - Birthright, Worf now tries to refind his spiritual side by meditating in his quarters entranced in front of an open fire, surrounded by candles, awaiting a vision. His unprecedented failure to report for duty is noticed by Riker, who finds him in this entranced state nearly about to burn down his own room.

Picard suggests he takes time to find his spiritual roots off-duty. He takes his advice and takes leave to visit the Klingon temple on the planet Beroth. Here he becomes quickly frustrated as mere children around him have visions in the caves staring into the fire while he has none. He has almost given up hope when a vision appears to him. Moments later he realizes this is no vision, but rather Kahless ressurected!

Kayless proves his identity to the High priests by telling the story of how the first bat'leth (the Klingon Sword) was forged from the hair of Kahless by lava and water. Worf is still skeptical and challenges Kahless to a fight. When it looks as though they are fairly evenly matched, possibly Kahless less so, Kayless ends the fight by toasting the Klingon spirit of battle and honor.

The no less skeptical crew of the Enterprise transports Kahless to meet with Gowron, who is positive that the prophet is a trick of the Klingon Clerics. He demands a DNA test to be done, the new Kahless' compared ith the blood on the ancient dagger. Amazingly, Kahless passes the test and Worf's faith is renewed.

Later, Kahless is challenged by Gowron. Gowron disarms him, knocks him to the floor, and is about to deliver the finishing blow when Worf stays his hand. Gowron laughs and mocks "the greatest warrior in Klingon history". Worf's faith is lost again.

Kahless is seriously disillusioned by the battle. The dejected klingon is being consoled by the Clerics when Worf enters and threatens their lives if they do not admit the truth. It is then they tell him that this Kahless was cloned and implanted with memories fabricated from scriptues.

Worf tells brings the Clerics, Gowron and the Kahless clone together and tells Gowron the truth as well. Then he says that the Kahless clone must be made Emporer of the Klingon empire, with political power left to the High Council, but influence over morality and guidance left to the new Kahless. Gowron resists, but Worf promises civil war if Kahless is not made Emporer. In the end, Gowron concedes and kneels to Kahless.

Worf is left feeling disilussioned as well. This is not the real Kahless. The empire will be told, though he will still serve as a figure head. Only the clones faith and reassurance to Worf that the spirit of Kahless is what is important and that his return is imminent is of any comfort.

Review:

3 1/2 stars

Worf episodes are generally good, and this one is no exception. I did'nt catch this one the first time around or on reruns and was somewhat put off by the fact that I did not recognize what is essentially the Klingon Beowulf or Jesus from any other episodes.

And that a Kahless clone was put into power as emporer seemed a bit strange, especially for the Klingon empire, who are all about keepin' it real. You felt very sorry for the man as he learned he was just a puppet, but I suppose I wouldnt be too put off if I learned I was cloned from the DNA of Jesus Christ. It's still something to write home about.

Worf's battle with his faith is what really keeps this one together, constantly questioning Kahless and Sto-Vo-Kor (klingon heaven). Ussually, he comes off as a mindless drone, following rituals and scriptures to the t. His doubt in this episode is somwhat haunting and reassuring at the same time.

I give this episode an "Our Father " and two "Hail Mary's "

The Quality of Life

Star Trek: The Next Generation
Episode 134
StarDate 46302.7
Air Date 11-14-1992

Dec 30th, 2005

Synopsis:

Data tries to protect what he believes to be newly devised technological life forms, the exocomps, from being enslaved and put in harm's way. He nearly sacrifices the Captain and Geordi to do so.

Review:

3 1/2 stars for sheer stupid hilarity

One of the funniest episodes ever. The exocomps float through the air, but as they do so, they wobble as though possibly suspended on... hmmm... could they be... strings? If the bad floating effects aren't enough, the meer appearance of these little creatures with their coniferous body and plastic feet brings the expression "Mr. Potato-Borg" to mind along with flashbacks of Devo videos.

On a serious note, though the episode isn't the most exciting one, it is Data-centric and quite memorable. You do feel for Data as he strives to find another constructed life form, but the repercussions of his actions are a bit unrealistic.

I give this episode a "Whip it good!" and a pair of "Angry Eyes".

Coming Soon

I will be creating similar pages for Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. If I get really bored, I'll even do classic Star Trek even though we all know that Captain Picard is the Beatles to James T. Kirk's Elvis.

Strangely enough, I will be rating Smallville episodes as well. A friend watches them religiously and I have been recruited as water cooler support. Admittedly, though the Smallville I have seen is ineffably bad, it is also rather addictive. Grow a spine, Clark!
